Fishing the Mountain Rivers of NH

Here is a story about two members of the site fishing together for the first time. Caddis (Bill Pierce) and Lee got together and fished the Upper Ellis and the Wildcat Rivers on Friday the 11th of September. Water was cold and the fishing was slow but both had a great time together.

This trip was a long time coming. I first wanted to fish with Bill in the early summer but he had problems and could not make the day we planned back then. So we made plans again and this time all worked out as planned. I got up early and had breakfast and off to meet Bill at First Bridge on the Saco in North Conway. Made one quick stop at the Eaton Village Store for coffee and I was good for the day. Got to First Bridge and Bill was already there putting on his boots. I told him that I would be wet wading with wading shoes and shorts. He told me he could not do that with the water as cold as it would be that day. We made one pit stop along the way to the Upper Ellis and arrived at our destination by 8:30 am and got ready to fish. It was a sunny day but cool and when we got to the water it was very cold, colder then I had expected and the wading was tricky because of the cold water.
Fishing was very slow to non-existent this day on the Upper Ellis. I suspect it was because of the cold weather we had just had and the fact that a weather front had just come through. Bill did manage to hook one very small wild brookie but I never saw a fish all morning, and this was water that I had fished just 6 days earlier and had good action.
Because the fishing was so slow on the Upper Ellis we decided to move over to the Wildcat River in Jackson NH. We found a good place to park and walked down river a short distance to start fishing back up stream. The fishing again was slow but the water was not as cold as the Ellis so we stuck with it knowing we should get into some fish. After a time Bill placed a hopper over a good run and was rewarded with a beautiful wild brookie. We fished up for about 3/4 of a mile, with both of us catching a few fish. The fish were all wild and just beautiful. We made one more stop on the Wildcat up farther on the river and did catch a few more fish.
I have attached slide shows of Bill's and My photo's for you to see.
